Chairman’s Annual Report 2015

The Board of Directors would like to thank you all for attending today’s AGM and for your continuing support of Bridgend Tourism Association. Our strength as a tourism association plays a vital role in shaping the future of our destination and long may it continue!

Directors 


BTA Director

Mike Clarke-  Porthcawl Harbourside 

Mike holds a Cardiff University MBA and has had held management positions within Private, Public and Third Sector organisations. Following early experience with General Motors and Ford Motor Company, Mike joined Remploy, as part of the Department of Work & Pension. He has held a range of senior management positions and has initiated numerous major new business national programme partnerships.

Mike is a Trustee/Director of several organisations including: Director of the Remploy Pension Scheme, Chair of the Board of a large national charity with a turnover of £25m per annum, Director of Porthcawl YMCA and Chair of Trustees for Porthcawl Sea Cadets. He has also been a member of Porthcawl Town Council for 11 years and was Mayor of Porthcawl 2013/14.

He has also led several community improvement initiatives which includes the major refurbishment of the Porthcawl Boxing Club and the £700k funding and re-building of Porthcawl YMCA, both of which are now thriving with new business models.

Mike is now Director of the Bridgend Tourism Association and is an active link with members and the Harbourside Project


Lewis Chamberlain retired Hotelier & Tourism Expert

For most of the 90s, Lewis known as Lew was Quality Director of the in-house catering operation in Royal Mail consisting of more than 500 staff restaurants  throughout the UK.

Lew then turned his attention to tourism in the Brecon Beacons National Park and ran a 300-year old hotel in the Western Beacons.

Lew was a member of the Brecon Beacons Tourism Local Action Group which set out to unite local businesses in the overall promotion of the area.

Latterly, Lew has been with the Bridgend County Borough Tourism Team based in the tourism information centres.

Lew is now Director of the Bridgend Tourism Association and is an active link with members and repesents the Board as Vice Chairman on the reach RDP LAG


Chris Smart Porthcawl Chamber of Trade & Commerce

Chris Smart DirectorChris Smart,elected to the Board of BTA in the Spring of 2014 has had involvement in the Tourist industry going back over three decades.

Aged 64 Chris was born and bred in Porthcawl at one time Director of the Esplanade Hotel and licensee of several entertainment establishments.

He served as Chairman of the former Porthcawl and District Tourist Association and is currently President of Porthcawl Chamber of Trade and Commerce and a member of the Tourism and Events Committee of Porthcawl Town Council having been leader of the council from 2004 to 2008.

Trained as a journalist and communications man he now runs his own business Mid-Glamorgan Press Agency with offices and a staff in Mary Street, Porthcawl.

As Director and Chairman he enhances the diversity of the Board and links the BTA to other businesses

 


Hugh Murray Director BTAHugh Murray Porthcawl Surf School 

Hugh Murray is owner of Porthcawl Surf School, Wales’s Premier Surf School and training academy. Hugh has been involved in surf sport, education and surf lifesaving for over 37 years. Club Chairman of Sker and Pink Bay Surf lifesaving club for many years, he has competed at all levels including the World Championships and has held Welsh and British Titles.

As owner of Porthcawl Surf School Hugh coaches on daily basis and is one of the only surf schools in the UK that operate year round. He is a leader in the development of young persons programmes including surf and lifesaving. He is an active trainer and examiner for SLS GB and Technical Chairman of Surf Life Saving Wales.  He also sits on the working party for producing a UK National Beach Lifeguard Manual and was recently appointed to the National Water Safety Forum Beach Advisory Group. In addition Hugh has developed a disability surf programme with trainer Dan Wilmore and again, leads the way in this field of empowering disabled persons to achieve through surfing.  Last but not least he also produces the Porthcawl Tide Tables.

Hugh’s passion and dedication to surf coaching rarely sees him out of the water and he is a well known figure in surfing in Wales Community and Great Britain Surf Lifesaving.

Karl Schmidtke Trecco Bay Holiday Park

Karl was Chairman of the BTA since its inception  and is also Vice Chairman of the BHHPA in West Wales. Karl is passionate about the need for private and public organisations to work closely together in order to benefit the greater tourism product. Karl has moved to Cornwall and we wish him well in his future.
