Glamorgan Holiday Hotel is a well established respite hotel located on the seafront of Porthcawl. Its position opposite the harbour provides it with unparalleled views of the Bristol Channel and the Ogmore River estuary.
Opened in 1979 it was originally owned and operated by Cardiff, Bridgend and Rhondda Cynon Taff Local Authorities however in 1996 it was transferred away from the authorities to operate as a stand-alone not for profit entity. Since 2010 it has been supported by Cartrefi Cymru who are a Cardiff based not for profit organisation providing support to people living independent throughout Wales who have learning difficulties
The hotel’s remit has always been and continues to be offering affordable respite facilities in the form of holidays or short breaks for local people and those living further afield in the south Wales region who are elderly or disabled. As more and more families commit themselves in supporting relatives to continue living independently in the community, pressures can build due to the increasing needs of the individual who is being looked after and the dependency this creates. Every now and then it helps both the carer and the person who is being cared for to have a well-earned break. Respire care is now becoming an increasing need in the community but not always understood so here is a brief explanation:
“Respite is short-term care used as a temporary alternative to a person’s usual care arrangements. It refers to either the person who is cared for or a relative or friend who cares for someone else.
A respite break gives the elderly or a person with disabilities something to look forward to: daily routines can get tedious, especially if the person concerned has an active mind and has been an active person throughout their life. Having a holiday is a great way of giving the person something to look forward to and plan for.
They provide a stimulating change of scene for the elderly or person with disabilities. A change of scenery is a great stimulant for anyone going on holiday, but especially so for people where quite often, they rarely go beyond their own four walls. The mental stimulation a respite holiday provides often results in a noticeable alertness that has not been seen for a long time.
Carers can benefit significantly from just a short break – The Carer website states “In most jobs, people work set hours and can relax at weekends or on days off. They are not expected to work without a break. It is only reasonable that Carers too should enjoy some of the benefits respite breaks produce. You need time to yourself, to relieve stress and prevent burnout”. The Alzheimers Society comment that “people who care for someone with dementia often carry on without realising how tired or tense they have become. A break or holiday can help them relax and recharge their batteries.”
The Glamorgan Holiday Hotel in Porthcawl provides increasingly sought after respite facilities with the environment of a hotel as a unique option to a care or nursing home. It has 39 comfortable bedrooms designed for the elderly and people with disabilities. There is a team of experienced care staff available 24/7 to provide support for guests throughout their visit. Guests can either stay on an independent basis or book one of our popular care packages to suit individual needs and help make the most of their respite break. The hotel is registered with the Care & Social Services Inspectorate for Wales (CSSIW) and is inspected annually by their officers. Full board is offered each day with a cooked breakfast, light lunch and home-cooked dishes served in the evening. The Catering Team have recently been awarded a level 5 in Hygiene management by the local Environmental Health Officer for the second consecutive year. The hotel is located opposite the harbour/marina with outstanding views of the Bristol Channel and is a few minutes straight level walk to the shops in the town centre. Transport to and from home to the hotel in an adapted minibus can be arranged (at cost).
On most days at the hotel there are activities taking place during the day and live entertainment in the evening. On certain days trips out in the hotel’s adapted minibus take place to local shopping centres or local places of interest. During the Spring and Autumn there are themed weeks including Rock n Roll (during the Elvis Festival), 1940’s and the Wartime years and Art & Craft to name a few. The Turkey & Tinsel programs before Christmas prove very popular, giving guests the chance to experience Christmas in full but be at home with family and friends over the holiday period itself. The hotel remains open over Christmas and the New Year with a packed program of seasonal activities and events at a pace to suit all tastes.
The long-serving team at the Glamorgan Holiday Hotel are very proud of the service they provide to their guests many of whom return year after year to enjoy the facilities of both the town of Porthcawl and the hotel. Guests can be assured of a very special welcome and to be well looked after during their stay at the hotel – as one guest, Brenda who lives in Bridgend, recently commented ” No other place is as lovely as the Glamorgan Holiday Hotel and we have met many friends. As you enter into the Glamorgan you come as strangers but leave as friends “
